‘Medieval Uprising’

A specialist in folk and medieval music, Laura was a founder member of the successful group Horses Brawl.

She has performed widely on television and radio.

Laura’s Norfolk-inspired take on the music of Machaut, Hildegard and the Cantigas de Santa Maria has won her Arts Council support.

 

Laura Cannell – Biography

Award winning fiddle and recorder player Laura Cannell has established herself as an innovative performer and explorer of early and contemporary music. For the past ten years she has toured extensively with the experimental folk and early music duo Horses Brawl, released four albums and a duo album with experimental harpist Rhodri Davies. She has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC4, ITV, Sky Arts and Resonance FM.

Laura will be performing music from her new solo project ‘Medieval Uprising’ which has just been awarded a grant from the Arts Council of England. Laura explores the spaces between ancient, improvised, traditional and experimental music, she performs live improvisations and atmospheric new interpretations based on fragments of medieval music from the 5th – 14th centuries using overbowed fiddle and double-barreled recorders.

The programme ‘Medieval Uprising’ includes new interpretations of music by: Hildegard von Bingen (1098 – 1179), Guillaumme de Machaut (1300 – 1377), Mesrop Mashtots (362 – 440 AD).

Laura has performed her cutting edge take on ancient music at many prestigious festivals and venues including: Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Bury Festival, Bath International Music Festival, Brighton Early Music Festival, The City of London Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, The National Portrait Gallery, London’s Southbank, Tate Britain , The Aldeburgh Festival and many more.
